How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Before the freeze.
Before freezing conditions, insulate all exposed exterior pipes. Foam or wrap insulation works best; however temporary insulation such as towels, blankets, or newspapers is better than nothing.
Locate the water shut-off valve in advance of freezing temperatures in case a pipe bursts.
When to protect?
When the temperature is below 28 degrees for more than 6 hours.
How to protect?
Run a trickle of water in the faucet furthest away from where the water enters your home.
Conserve water due to high demand.
Due to the high demand of water during a freeze, it is important to conserve water other than the trickle mentioned above to keep our wells operating. Please conserve water usage until after temperatures have reached above 32 degrees. (Please avoid any unnecessary washing of clothes, dishwasher usage, etc.)
If you have a frozen pipe...
Be patient. Pipes need to warm up gradually to prevent further damage.
Do not pour hot water over a frozen pipe.
Never use a space heater to heat your pipes.
If a pipe bursts while thawing or if there is already a leak from the frozen area, turn off the water at the shut-off valve.
